The Lebanese Cinema after the War...
After the war of 1990, Lebanon was troubled by the destruction that was left after the war, it is why we find Movies that seeks for escapism, inspired by the youth force and some of humorous facts, while the others talks about the victims and the missing people of the Civil War...
An IMDB (a web-service called “the Internet Movie Data Base”) user called “@Valentino” decided to make a selection of this Movie, and it’s quite interesting :
Firstly he talks about movies that are not existing in IMDB : like the movies A7ebbini, Al mashhad al akhir, Charbel, Ghannoujet bayya, Khallik ma3e, Khillet ward, Madame Bambino, Meshwar, Silina, S.L.Film, and Wledkon mish elkon... Then he pursues his talking by beginning with a movie of 105 mins, “West Beyrouth (À l'abri les enfants)” Directed by Ziad Doueiri in 1998 where the action is taking place In April, 1975, where the civil war breaks out; so that Beirut is partitioned along a Moslem-Christian line. Tarek is in high school, making Super 8 movies with his friend, Omar. At first the war is a lark: school has closed, the violence is fascinating, getting from West to East is a game. His mother wants to leave; his father refuses. Tarek spends time with May, a Christian, orphaned and living in his building. By accident, Tarek goes to an infamous brothel in the war-torn Olive Quarter, meeting its legendary madam, Oum Walid. He then takes Omar and May there using her underwear as a white flag for safe passage. Family tensions rise. As he comes of age, the war moves inexorably from adventure to tragedy.
- “Et maintenant on va où ?” (Where do we go now ?) a movie of 110 mins Directed by Nadine Labaki in 2011 in wich the story is about a group of Lebanese women try to ease religious tensions between Christians and Muslims in their village.
- “Bosta” a movie of 142 mins Directed by Philippe Aractingi in 2005, where a certain Kamal Maf'ouss returns from France 50 years after a traumatic explosion in his native Beirut, where he was nationalized and become a composer-choreographer. He reassembles youth friends from his late pa's multicultural school. They pimp a decommissioned school bus to tour the country in preparation of Lebanon's annual festival of the choral dance-song genre Debka. Opinions clash on their modern, cosmopolitan version of a traditional genre, even among their friends and family, while other personal problems complicate matters further.
- [ This one is personally my Favorite... :) ] “Sukkar banat / Caramel” A film from the Talented Nadine Labaki wich wash shot in the year 2007, a 95 mins of full escapism ! this movie is a romantic comedy about the daily lives of five Lebanese women living in Beirut... a Must See.
And : Beyrouth hôtel (2011), Sous les bombes (2007), Le cerf-volant (2003), Zozo (2005), Rue Huvelin (2011), 33 Days (2012), Falafel (2006), A Perfect Day (2005), and many others etc...
Hope you Enjoy this selection !
